Solar in the Rainy Season: The Real Reason It Fails

Using solar in the rainy season can be brutal. Last week a man called me almost shouting.

His solar was perfect in February. Bright mornings, full battery by noon, fan and freezer running all night. Then June came, the rain started, and now by 6am his inverter is beeping empty. This battery is bad, he said. I just bought it last year.

So I asked him two questions. By the second one we both knew the battery was fine.

The problem was something nobody had warned him about. And if you have solar in Nigeria, it is probably about to happen to you too.

What actually happens to solar in the rainy season

A solar panel does not run on heat. It runs on light.

On a bright dry season morning, a panel rated 450 watts gives you something close to 450 watts. Your battery fills fast and you have power to spare.

Now put a thick grey rainy season sky over that same panel. It might give you 60 watts. Sometimes less, when the clouds are heavy and it is raining sideways the way it does here. The panel is not broken. There just is not enough light getting through.

One cloudy day you survive, because the battery had reserve. But rain in Port Harcourt does not come for a day and leave. It comes for three days straight, then a break, then two more. Across those days your panels quietly produce a fraction of normal, and the battery never gets a proper full charge. Every night it starts a little lower than the night before.

So by the third or fourth grey day it is flat by morning. That is the beeping at 6am.

Why everyone blames the heat, or the battery

Because heat is the obvious villain. We feel it. We know this country is hot. So when something electrical misbehaves, na heat is the first guess. Extreme heat does shorten the life of some equipment over time, but heat is not what drains your battery overnight in June.

The other easy target is the battery. It is weak. They sold me fake battery. Sometimes that is true. But very often the battery is perfectly healthy and is simply being asked to do something it was never sized to do, which is carry the whole house for days with barely any help from the sun. The man who called me had a good battery. What he had was a system designed for a sunny day in February, running in a rainy week in June.

The real reason your system gives up by morning

Most solar systems in Nigeria are sized for the good days. The salesman comes, the sun is shining, the numbers look great, everybody is happy. Nobody plans for the worst week of the year.

But the worst week is exactly when you need power most. Rainy season is when NEPA gets even less reliable, when you are indoors more, when the children are home, when you want light and a fan and the freezer to keep working.

So the real reason solar disappoints you in the rain is not the rain. It is that the system was never built to ride through it. Two things are usually too small. The panels are too small to recharge the battery on low light days, and the battery is too small to carry you through the days when the panels cannot keep up.

Fix those two and the rain stops being a crisis. It becomes weather.

Why tubular makes a bad situation worse

If you are running the old tubular batteries, the rainy season is especially cruel to you.

Because tubular hates being left half full. When it does not get a full charge regularly, which is exactly what a long rainy stretch does to it, it slowly damages itself inside. So the rain does not just leave you in darkness. It quietly shortens the life of the battery you are depending on. Then dry season arrives, the battery is already weaker, and the disappointment compounds. We went through that in full in before you buy that tubular battery.

This is one of the real reasons I moved my own home to lithium years ago, and it is what we install now. Lithium is comfortable sitting at a partial charge. It does not punish you for a cloudy week, and you can safely use far more of what is inside it. So for the same real power it carries you longer through bad days and lasts far more years doing it.

I have run my house largely off-grid since 2021. That is five rainy seasons now, the real Port Harcourt kind. I am not telling you this from a brochure. I am telling you from my own meter readings.

How to fix it properly

You do not need to panic buy panels in the rain. You need to plan for it the way you plan for any other certainty, because that is what it is. Here is how we approach it.

Size for the worst week, not the best day. A good design assumes a stretch of low sun days and makes sure the battery still carries your important loads through them. That single idea fixes most complaints about solar here.

Give the battery enough to ride out the grey days. Enough to carry two or three low sun days without hitting empty, so a rainy stretch is uncomfortable at worst rather than a blackout. Make sure the panels can refill on a dull day. A little extra panel capacity looks like overkill in dry season and is exactly what saves you in the rains. It is the cheapest insurance in the whole system.

Build in a backup top up. A proper hybrid setup lets NEPA or a generator quietly top up the battery on the worst days, instead of you sitting in darkness waiting for the sun. Used well this is rare and cheap, not constant.

See what is happening. Modern lithium systems let you watch the battery from your phone. When you can see it dropping over a rainy week, you adjust early instead of waking up to a dead house.

None of this is exotic. It is the difference between a system somebody sold you and a system designed for where you live.

The rain is not the surprise

The rain comes every single year. That part is not a surprise.

So a system that works only when the sun is out is not really solving your problem, because the sun being out was never your problem. The whole point of going solar was to stop thinking about power. If it disappoints you the moment the weather turns, it was sized for the showroom, not for Nigeria.
