How to Spot a Fake Lithium Battery in Nigeria
A relabelled lithium battery is harder to catch than a fake panel, because a panel can be tested against the sun in ten minutes and a battery cannot.
It charges. It powers your house. Everything looks right for about three months. Then the night starts ending early, and by then the seller has stopped answering.
There are four specific lies told about batteries in this market. Each has a tell, and one of them can be settled with a bathroom scale.

Lie one: the capacity on the sticker
This is the big one. A case marked 200Ah that holds 100Ah of real cells.
It behaves exactly as you would expect. Charges faster than it should, because there is less to fill. Empties faster than it should, for the same reason. Most buyers put both down to the inverter or the weather and never suspect the box.
The tell is weight, and it is the check almost nobody does. Lithium cells are dense and there is no way to fake that. A genuine 48V 200Ah battery is a serious lift, usually around 80 to 90kg. If a delivery man carries it in on his own without complaining, something is wrong.
Ask the seller what the unit weighs before it arrives, then weigh it. A bathroom scale is enough. If it comes in twenty per cent light, the cells inside are not what the label says.
Lie two: the cells inside
Cells come in grades. A grade cells are the ones that passed full testing. B grade cells failed something, usually on capacity matching, and are sold cheaply for exactly this purpose.
A pack built from mismatched cells fails in a particular way. The weakest cell hits empty first, the battery management system shuts everything down to protect it, and you lose the whole pack’s remaining capacity because one cell gave up early. So a 10kWh battery behaves like a 6kWh one, and gets worse each month as the gap widens.
You cannot see this from outside. What you can do is ask which cells are inside, by manufacturer, and watch what happens. A real supplier answers immediately, because it is a selling point. A vague answer is your answer. We set out the rest in what makes a good lithium battery.
Lie three: the battery management system
Every lithium battery needs a management system. It balances the cells, cuts off at the top and bottom of the charge, and protects against heat and short circuits.
The cheap packs have something in there, technically. It might do nothing beyond a basic cutoff, with no balancing at all, which is the function that keeps the cells from drifting apart over years.
Ask for the specification. Ask whether it balances actively or passively, what current it is rated for, and whether it communicates with the inverter. If a seller cannot answer that, they do not know what they are selling you, which is its own kind of answer.
Lie four: the brand on the case
Cases are printed to order. A known name on the front means nothing on its own, and the counterfeits are good now.

A genuine unit also has documentation. A datasheet with real numbers, a warranty with a named party behind it in this country, and a way to reach somebody in two years. A phone number that goes dead is the most common warranty in this market.
Weigh it before you pay
If you take one thing from this, take the scale.
Cell chemistry has a fixed energy density. There is no clever manufacturing that makes a battery lighter and keeps the capacity, and no marketing story that changes it. The physics of lithium iron phosphate cells is not negotiable.
So a battery that weighs substantially less than the specification is lighter because there is less inside it. Weigh it on delivery, in front of the person delivering it, before money changes hands.
