Generator vs Solar Cost in Nigeria: The Real Numbers
Most people who buy a generator never sit down and add it up. They buy fuel, they service the machine, and they tell themselves they will look into solar when the time is right.
So let us do the maths instead. What a generator and a solar system really cost over one year, three years and five years, using running costs rather than numbers pulled from the air.
By the end you will know what your generator is costing you. And the one-off cost of solar will look very different next to that figure.

What a generator actually costs per year
Start with fuel, because that is the cost you already feel.
Petrol runs around ₦1,300 a litre across most of the country. A mid range machine carrying a few lights, a fridge, a TV and a fan burns roughly 15 litres across 12 hours, which is conservative given how little NEPA most of Lagos and Port Harcourt actually gets.
Then add what the machine itself asks for. An oil change every 100 to 150 hours, which at 12 hours a day is every 8 to 12 days. Plugs, air filters, carburettor cleaning. An AVR or a starter motor when they go. And the machine itself, which gives you 3 to 5 years of heavy duty running before it needs replacing.

What that comes to over 1, 3 and 5 years

What solar costs over the same period
Here is where the shape of the comparison changes completely.
A lithium solar system is a one-off. You pay once for panels, batteries and an inverter. After that the sun charges the panels every day for nothing, the battery stores it, and the house runs with no noise, no fumes and no fuel receipt.
We will not print a system price here, and it is worth saying why rather than just skipping it. A system is sized to your load, so a one bedroom flat and a duplex running two air conditioners are different numbers, and both move with the exchange rate. But you do not need our price to do the useful sum. You need yours. Whatever a system costs you, this is when it pays for itself against what you are already spending:

Find your row. Most homes we speak to sit between the second and the third, which puts payback somewhere between 10 months and three and a half years. After that the power is effectively free, and a quality lithium battery is still working 10 years in. Panels carry 25 year performance warranties. The inverter runs 5 to 10 years. Servicing across all of it is keeping the panels clean and a periodic check.
That is the whole argument, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion. The generator has no payback point. It simply keeps charging you.

What the generator costs you beyond money
Your time. Somebody in the house manages that machine every single day. Switching it on. Switching it off. Buying fuel. Chasing the repair man. Over five years that is not a small thing.
Your appliances. Generators make unstable voltage, and that quietly wears down televisions, laptops and compressors. You rarely connect the dead appliance to the generator that killed it.
Your sleep and your air. Anyone who has tried to sleep beside a running generator knows. And the fumes are not a nuisance, they are a hazard. Carbon monoxide from badly placed generators kills people in this country every year.
The objections worth answering
Is solar really cheaper? Over anything longer than two or three years, yes. Solar costs more up front, but a generator keeps charging you in fuel, servicing, repairs and replacement forever.
What if NEPA improves? Then the system simply does less work and gets cheaper to run. It charges from NEPA when NEPA is there. You do not lose the investment either way.
Can solar carry everything my generator carries? It depends on your load. Lights, fans, fridge, TV and a home office are comfortable. Small daily amounts, one large number
The generator feels cheap because you pay for it in small daily pieces. Solar feels expensive because you see the whole number at once. But add up three to five years and the comparison is not close.
