How Long Do Lithium Batteries Last in Nigeria?
A man called us last year about a lithium battery that had died in fourteen months. He was angry, and he was right to be. He had paid good money on the promise of ten years and got barely one.
So we went to look. The battery was fine when it was installed. But what killed it was the cheap charge controller sitting next to it, cooking it a little more every day, in a metal cabinet with no air in it.
So when people ask how long do lithium batteries last, that is the story I think of. The honest answer is that it depends far less on the battery than anyone selling you one will admit.

The number on the spec sheet is a ceiling, not a promise
Manufacturers rate lithium batteries at somewhere between 3,000 and 6,000 charge cycles. Cycle it once a day and that works out at eight to sixteen years. You will see that figure on every spec sheet and in most blog posts. It is not a lie.
But it is a laboratory number. It assumes a controlled temperature, a correctly sized system, a decent inverter and charge controller, and a battery that is never pushed past its limits. Now put that battery in a compound in Port Harcourt, in a hot cabinet, on an inverter somebody chose because it was cheap. The number changes.
How long do lithium batteries last in a real Nigerian home
I have been doing this for years, and I have run my own home almost entirely off NEPA since 2021, on the same equipment we sell. So this is not theory.
Good batteries, properly installed in a well sized system, with decent equipment around them, hold up. I have seen systems still running strong at five, six and seven years with no real sign of fading.
However, I have also seen lithium batteries die in a year or two. Sometimes less.
The technology did not fail in those houses. What surrounded it did.
What actually shortens a lithium battery’s life
There are four culprits, and in my experience they turn up in roughly this order. Because once you know them, you can refuse a job that ignores them.
Cheap equipment. A poor inverter or charge controller that overcharges the battery, or charges it too hard, will finish off a battery rated for ten years. Your battery is only ever treated as well as the equipment managing it. This is the one that killed that man’s battery, and it is the most common by a distance.
Wrong sizing. If the battery is too small for what you run on it, it gets pushed hard every single night. Every day it is drained deeper than it should be. That daily stress takes years off, quietly, and nobody notices until the night stops reaching morning. Work out what size battery your home actually needs before anyone quotes you, and this one disappears.
Heat. A battery in a sealed metal box, hitting forty degrees regularly, ages much faster than the same battery in a cool indoor space. Installation location is not a small detail here. It is one of the biggest decisions in the whole job, and it costs nothing to get right on the day.
The battery itself. There are a lot of poorly assembled batteries in this market. Off-spec cells. No proper battery management system. So what should you actually plan around?
So here is what I would tell you if you were sitting in our office.
With a quality battery, a correctly sized system, a good inverter and a sensible location, expect five to twelve years of useful service. Some go further. Some fall short when the conditions are wrong.
But do not buy on the basis that it will definitely give you fifteen. That is the ceiling under perfect conditions, and your compound is not a laboratory.
And plan around the whole system, not the battery on its own. The battery is one part of what decides how long your power holds up. The equipment around it, the sizing, the quality of the install and how it is managed afterwards all matter just as much.
Even at the low end, it still beats tubular
Still, take the pessimistic figure and the case is not close.
Tubular and lead acid batteries in our conditions typically give you two to three years, often less. Most people replace them every couple of years. That is repeat replacement costs, repeat installation costs, and repeat downtime while you sort it out.
A lithium battery that gives you five to eight years is three or four times that. And because you can safely use almost all of a lithium battery, one of them does the work of two or three tubular units, so you buy less of it in the first place. Three questions that tell you whether yours will last
When somebody is selling you a battery, ask these three, and listen to how they answer rather than what they answer.
Ask what inverter and charge controller they are recommending with it, and why those specifically. Then ask how they arrived at the capacity for your load, and whether they measured anything. Finally, ask what the warranty actually covers, and what voids it.
A straight answer to all three tells you the system was designed to last. Vagueness on any of them tells you it was designed to sound good on paper. There are more of these in our list of questions to ask before paying for a lithium battery.
The short version
So, lithium batteries last as long as the system around them allows. Buy well, size it properly, keep it cool, and five to twelve years is a fair expectation. Get any of those wrong and the badge on the box will not save you.
