Why Is My Inverter Beeping? Fault Codes Explained

It is somewhere after midnight, the room is getting warm, and something in the corridor is beeping.

Most people do one of two things at that point. Panic and call somebody, or get used to it and ignore it for months. Both cost money. The first spends a callout on something you could have read off the screen. The second lets a real problem quietly finish a battery.

So here is how to tell which one you have.

Photograph the screen first

Before you unplug anything or switch anything off, take a picture of the display while it is still alarming.

Almost every beep has a code, an icon or a flashing light beside it, and that code disappears the moment somebody starts changing things. A photo of it will often save you a visit entirely, and it is the first thing we ask for.

These are the units we fit most often, so this list covers the majority of the homes we look after.

Why a code list you found online can mislead you

This is the part nobody tells you, and it matters more than the table above.

Fault codes are not standardised. Each manufacturer sets its own, and different brands reuse the same numbers for completely different faults.

Here is a real example from two brands we work with. On the units in that table, 58 means output abnormal. On another brand we install, 58 means a fan malfunction. Same number, different problem, different level of urgency.

It happens further down the list too. 05 is an output short circuit on the first set. On the second brand, 5 is over temperature and the short circuit is 12.

So if you search your code and act on the first list you find, you can end up confidently treating the wrong fault. Get your own brand’s manual, or send us the photo and tell us the make. That is exactly why the rest of this is organised by what you can hear rather than by number.

It beeps every night at around the same time

A slow, repeating beep with a low battery icon, arriving at roughly the same hour, is the commonest thing we see. And it is not a fault. The battery has reached the level where the inverter warns you before shutting down to protect itself.

The real question is why you keep getting there, and it is almost always one of three things. The battery is too small for what you run, the panels are not refilling it, or something new got plugged in and nobody connected the two events.

If it started in June and never happened in February, it is the weather rather than the battery. That pattern is common enough that we wrote a whole post about it.

It beeps the moment the AC or the pump starts

A rapid, insistent beep, usually 07 on the units above, means you asked for more than the inverter can deliver in that instant.

Switch that appliance off and it should stop. If it does not, unplug things one at a time until it does, because whatever silences it is your culprit.

But if this happens with ordinary daily use, the inverter is undersized for your home, and no amount of careful switching fixes that. It is a design problem, and working out what your home actually needs will show you by how much.

It beeps when NEPA comes or goes

Many units beep briefly on a status change, and plenty of homes have lived with that for years without realising it is normal.

A longer complaint about input voltage means NEPA is arriving outside the range the inverter will accept, usually too low. It is refusing to pass bad power into your house or charge from it, which protects both. Nothing to do. It clears when the supply steadies.

It is hot, and beeping

Codes 01 and 02 on the list above, or 5 and 58 on the other brand, point the same way. Air.

Inverters and batteries get installed wherever there was space rather than wherever there is ventilation. A sealed cupboard, or a metal box catching the afternoon sun, cooks a system slowly. Heat is one of the few things that genuinely takes years off a battery, which we covered in how long lithium batteries last.

Clear whatever is stacked around it and open it up to the air. If it keeps happening, the location is wrong rather than the equipment.

A constant alarm, or a code you cannot place

Stop guessing. Note the code, keep the photo, and get somebody who knows the brand.

The alarm is usually the cheap part of the problem. Running a system through an internal fault is how a repair turns into a replacement, and we have been called out to more than one battery that could have been saved a fortnight earlier.

Most beeping is a sizing decision, not a fault

This is worth sitting with, because it reframes the whole thing.

Low battery every night is not a battery fault. Overload every time the AC starts is not an inverter fault. In both cases the equipment is working perfectly and reporting, accurately, that it was asked to do a job nobody sized it for.
