Home Battery Backup in Nigeria: Why You Need One

Most Nigerian homes get four to six hours of NEPA a day. Parts of Lagos get less. Parts of Rivers State get nothing for days at a stretch.

So the generator fills the gap, and it drinks. Twenty thousand naira a week, often more, just to keep a fridge cold and the lights on. That is not a power bill. That is a standing order you never signed.

Home battery backup stopped being a luxury conversation a while ago. Not because the technology suddenly changed, but because the cost of going without it keeps climbing.

What battery backup actually means

A home battery stores electricity so you can use it when NEPA is off or your panels are not generating.

So you charge it when the light comes, or continuously from panels on the roof, and then draw from it for the rest of the day and night. Your appliances notice nothing. The lights do not flicker. The freezer does not defrost.

The battery sits between your power source and your house, and an inverter turns the stored DC into the AC your sockets need. You set it up once and it runs quietly in the background for years.

Why the generator was never the long term answer

Generators are built for emergencies. We turned them into a primary power source, and that was always going to be expensive.

A mid range petrol generator burns roughly a litre and a half an hour at half load. Run it twelve hours a day and you are near fifty thousand naira a week on fuel alone, before servicing, oil, plugs, and the neighbour who has stopped speaking to you.

Then there is what it does to your things. Voltage swings damage televisions, laptops and compressors quietly, over months. You rarely notice until something simply stops working.

A lithium system runs silently, makes no fumes and delivers steady, clean power. No fuel. No weekly servicing. And it does not slowly destroy the appliances it is powering. Why now, and not five years ago

Lithium has existed for decades, but the price and availability that make it sensible for a Nigerian home arrived recently. Systems that were out of reach five years ago now sit in ordinary homes across Lagos and Port Harcourt.

Because several things moved at once. Lithium prices fell hard between 2020 and 2024, following the same curve solar panels took the decade before. Supply chains steadied. Local installers built real experience. And NEPA did not improve, which settled the argument for anyone doing the sums.

Peter Banigo, who founded Lithium Battery Depot and has run his own home on batteries since 2021, puts it plainly. The question stopped being whether he could afford it, and became how long he could afford to go without.

What a system actually looks like

Three main parts. Panels to generate, a lithium bank to store, and an inverter to convert it for the house.

The size depends entirely on what you want to carry. Lights, fans, a TV and phone charging will cover a two bedroom flat comfortably. Air conditioning, a big fridge and a full home office is a larger job and needs more panels and more battery. Working that out properly is the whole game, and this is how you do it.

Installation takes one to two days for most homes. After that it runs itself. When NEPA comes, it charges. When NEPA goes, the battery takes over with no switching and no waiting.

Most quality lithium systems carry a five to ten year warranty and last ten years or more in normal use. Compare that with the two to three years a tubular battery gives you here, which we went through in before you buy that tubular battery.

The cost comparison people get wrong

People look at the up front number and stop there. That reaction is fair, but it is only half the sum.

Take a household spending two hundred thousand naira a month on fuel and maintenance. That is two point four million a year. Over five years it is twelve million, and the generator will need replacing inside that.

So a properly sized system removes most of that from day one. It does not depreciate the way an engine does, and the power it stores from the panels costs nothing once they are up. For many homes here the payback lands between two and four years. After that you are generating and storing your own power for free.

What people want to know before they commit

Can it power my whole house? It depends on your load. A well sized system carries most or all of a typical home: lights, fans, fridge, TV, everyday appliances. Air conditioning adds a lot and needs a bigger system, which we covered honestly here. The first step is always a proper load assessment.

How long does a charge last? Again, it depends what you draw. A standard home running lights, a fridge and some electronics might get eight to twelve hours. With panels recharging through the day, many homes run almost entirely off the system year round.

Is it better than a generator? For everyday use, yes. Silent, no fuel, no fumes, and it protects your electronics instead of wearing them down. Many homes now keep the generator only as a last resort in a long grey spell.

Can I add panels later? Yes, and most people should plan for it. Getting the wiring and the roof right at the start makes that easy, which is why building solar friendly matters if you are still at that stage.

Why this stopped being a luxury
