How to Spot a Fake Solar Panel Before You Pay

Last year one of our technicians went to inspect a setup a client had bought elsewhere. The panels looked fine from the ground. Clean, mounted properly, wired neatly. But three of the six were producing barely half of what the label on the back claimed. He had paid for six 400 watt panels and was getting closer to 250 from half of them.

Nobody had swapped anything after installation. Those panels were fake from the day they went up, relabelled to look like a higher wattage than they could ever produce.

So this happens more than people realise, especially now demand has risen and the market has filled with importers nobody has vetted. Here is how to catch it before you pay, rather than months later when your battery stops reaching morning.

Why this is common, not rare

Panels are technical products. Most buyers cannot tell a genuine 400 watt panel from a relabelled 250 watt panel by looking at it. That gap between what is promised and what arrives is exactly where fakes live.

And the damage goes past wasted money. An underperforming panel means the battery charges slower, the system struggles on cloudy days, and you end up back on the generator more often than you should be. In the worst cases, substandard materials and poor wiring inside the junction box are a genuine fire risk rather than just weak output.

Check the certification label first

Every genuine panel carries a certification label, usually near the junction box. Look for IEC or UL marks and a manufacturer name you can actually search. Real manufacturers let you check a serial number against their own database. If the seller cannot tell you where to check it, that is your first red flag.

Do not expect a retail box to prove anything. Panels arrive on pallets, usually stacked in sets of thirty or so, and are handled loose from there. The label on the panel is what you are checking.

Check the physical size against the claimed wattage

This is the most common trick in the market. A supplier buys a genuine but smaller panel, say 250 watts, and rebrands it with a sticker claiming 400. The panel works. It simply cannot produce what the sticker says, because a 400 watt panel and a 250 watt panel are physically different sizes.

So compare the actual dimensions against the normal size for that wattage before you accept delivery. If a 400 watt panel looks noticeably smaller than every other 400 watt panel you have seen, the sticker is lying, not the panel.

Count the cells and the busbars

Those squares across the glass are the individual cells. Count them, and count the busbars running across each one. A genuine panel of a given brand and wattage has a fixed, known cell count and busbar layout. If what you count does not match what that brand and wattage should have, the panel and its label do not belong together.

Check the junction box and the connectors

Some brands emboss or print their logo onto the junction box on the back of the panel, and onto the MC4 connectors. Not every brand does, so this one depends on the manufacturer. But where a brand is known to mark those parts and yours are bare, ask why.

Cross-check the serial number in three places

This is the check that catches what the others miss, and it is the one worth remembering if you remember nothing else.

A genuine panel carries the same serial number in three places: printed on the glass, stamped or printed on the frame, and on the sticker at the back. Confirm all three match.

Because when a panel is relabelled, the back sticker is the easy part to peel off and replace. The number etched into the glass or stamped into the frame cannot go without leaving obvious damage. So if the sticker disagrees with the glass or the frame, you have just caught a swap that would otherwise have been invisible.

Check the build quality

Run your hand along the frame. It should be solid aluminium with no sharp burrs and no visible bending. The glass should sit flush and evenly sealed, with no gaps, no bubbling and no glue mess at the edges. Turn it over and the back sheet should be smooth and uniform rather than patchy or discoloured.

Test the real output before you accept delivery

This is the step that confirms everything else. Test the actual output with a solar panel meter in direct sunlight before the panels come off the truck.

Your reading will vary with the weather on the day, so do not expect an exact match to the rating. But a panel reading dramatically below its claimed output on a clear, sunny day has failed. Be careful with a deal that looks too generous

If one quote is dramatically lower than everyone else’s for the same claimed wattage and brand, that gap came from somewhere. Sometimes it is a real bulk discount. More often a corner was cut in the build or the origin.

So this does not mean the cheapest is always fake. It means any price disconnected from what everyone else is quoting deserves a direct question: why is yours different? A supplier who cannot answer clearly, or who rushes you before you can check, has told you something.

What people get wrong about fakes

Can a fake panel still generate power? Yes, and that is exactly why it is hard to catch without testing. It produces electricity, just far less than the label claims. The fridge still runs and the lights still come on, so people rarely realise until the battery stops holding.

Does a low price always mean a fake? No. Real price differences exist between brands and suppliers. What matters is whether the seller can back the price with certification, documentation and a serial number you can verify.

What if I already installed them? Test the real output under good sun and compare it to the label across all your panels. It will not announce itself

A fake panel does not announce itself. It looks fine on your roof and only shows itself through months of underperformance.

So check the certification and the serial numbers across the glass, the frame and the back sticker. Compare the physical size and the cell count to what that wattage should be. Then test the real output before you accept delivery.
