Is an Inverter/Solar System Expensive?
“Inverter and solar is too expensive, I’ll just use my generator.”
You hear this everywhere in Nigeria. Someone quotes ₦4-5 million for a proper solar + inverter + battery setup, and the automatic response is “That’s too much, let me just manage with generator.”
But here’s the question nobody’s actually calculating: expensive compared to what?
Let’s do the real math on what you’re currently spending on grid power and generators, then compare it to what an inverter system actually costs over time. The numbers might surprise you.
What You’re Paying Now: Grid Power
NERC approved electricity tariff for Band A customers (supposedly 20+ hours daily supply) is ₦209 per kWh as of 2025. Most people are paying around ₦210/kWh when you factor in all the charges.
Sounds reasonable until you remember two things:
- You’re not actually getting 20 hours of power daily
- When NERC feels like it, they bump you from Band B to Band A pricing without improving supply
Typical Lagos home monthly consumption: 300-500 kWh Monthly cost at ₦210/kWh: ₦63,000 – ₦105,000 Annual cost: ₦756,000 – ₦1,260,000
But wait – that’s only when NERC supplies power. When they don’t (which is often), you’re running your generator and spending on fuel on top of your electricity bill.

We recently installed a system for a client in Port Harcourt. 10kW solar, 14kWh lithium battery, 6kV inverter.
His electricity bill is now Zero. Not ₦5,000. Not ₦20,000. Actual zero.

These are conservative estimates. Many households run generators 8-10 hours daily, especially during times when the grid collapses.
The Real Monthly Costs
Let’s be practical about typical usage:
Small household (1-2 bedrooms) – 1kW generator:
- 4 hours daily average
- ₦52,920/month in fuel
- Plus NERC bill: ₦20,000-30,000/month
- Total: ₦75,000/month
Standard family home (3 bedrooms) – 3kW generator:
- 6 hours daily average
- ₦113,400/month in fuel
- Plus NERC bill: ₦40,000-60,000/month
- Total: ₦155,000/month
Large home (4-5 bedrooms) – 8kW generator:
- 8 hours daily average
- ₦356,400/month in fuel (diesel)
- Plus NERC bill: ₦60,000-80,000/month
- Total: ₦420,000/month
And that’s before generator maintenance, oil changes, repairs, and the fact that generators need replacing every 3-5 years with heavy use.
What an Inverter System Actually Costs
Now let’s price out proper inverter systems for the same households.
Small Household System
Power needs: 2-3kWh daily, 1-1.5kW peak
Equipment:
- 2kW 12V inverter: ₦300,000
- 3.6kWh lithium battery: ₦690,000
- 2 x 590W solar panels: ₦260,000
- Installation & accessories: ₦200,000
- Total: ₦1,450,000
Monthly cost after installation: ₦0
Payback period vs generator + grid: ₦1,450,000 ÷ ₦75,000/month = 19 months (less than 2 years)
This is aside from the fact that you would use this system for far more than 4 hours everyday!
Standard Family Home System
Power needs: 5-7kWh daily, 3-4kW peak

Payback period vs generator + grid: ₦5,300,000 ÷ ₦320,000/month = 17 months (less than 1.5 years)
Notice the pattern? The larger your current power spending, the faster solar + inverter pays for itself.

But What If I Can’t Afford the Upfront Cost?
Fair question. ₦3.5 million is a lot of money upfront, even if it saves ₦7 million over 5 years.
Here are practical options:
Option 1: Start Small, Expand Later
Don’t try to power everything at once. Start with essentials:
Basic starter system (₦1.35 million):
- 2kW inverter: ₦300,000
- 3.56kWh battery: ₦690,000
- 2 solar panels: ₦260,000
- Basic installation: ₦100,000
Powers lights, fans, TV, phone charging, small fridge. Use generator only for heavy loads like AC or water pump.
Your savings: Cut generator runtime from 6 hours to 2 hours daily = save ₦60,000-80,000/month
Use those monthly savings to expand the system within 12-18 months.
Option 2: Payment Plans
Some suppliers offer installment payments:
- 30-40% down payment
- Balance over 6-12 months
- Minimal interest (5-10%)
Example: ₦3.5 million system
- Down: ₦1.4 million
- Balance: ₦2.1 million over 6 months = ₦350,000/month
- Your current power spending: ₦155,000/month
Gap to cover: ₦195,000/month for 6 months, then ₦0/month forever.
Many families can manage an extra ₦195k/month for 6 months to eliminate power costs permanently.
Option 3: Inverter-Only System
If solar panels aren’t immediately affordable:

- Charge from NERC when power is available
- No generator needed
Cost: ₦1-2.5 million (depending on capacity)
Still eliminates generator costs (₦50-250k/month savings) and gives you backup power. Add solar panels later when budget allows.
What About Just the Inverter Without Battery?
Some people ask: “Can I just get an inverter that switches between generator and NERC?”
Yes, but you’re still paying for:
- Generator fuel whenever NERC fails
- NERC bills when they supply
- Generator maintenance and replacement
You’ve just added an inverter (₦300-650k) without solving the actual cost problem.
The battery is what eliminates ongoing costs. Solar panels keep the battery charged for free. That’s the combination that makes financial sense.
The Hidden Costs of Generators Nobody Talks About
Beyond fuel, generators cost you in other ways:
Noise pollution: Try working from home with a generator running 6 hours daily. Or sleeping with your neighbor’s generator 3 meters from your window.
Maintenance: Oil changes every 50-100 hours, spark plugs, air filters, carburetor cleaning. ₦20,000-50,000 every 3-4 months.
Repairs: Generators break. Alternator fails, engine seizes, fuel pump dies. Repairs cost ₦50,000-200,000 depending on what breaks.
Replacement cycle: Heavy use kills generators fast. That ₦530,000 generator lasts 3-4 years max with 6 hours daily use. You’re buying another one before you know it.
Stress: Constantly buying fuel, starting generator manually when power fails, dealing with mechanics, hoping it starts when you need it.
Health: Carbon monoxide, noise stress, fuel fumes. These have real health costs even if you don’t calculate them in naira.
Inverter systems? Zero noise. Zero fumes. Zero mechanical failures. Zero stress.
When Does Grid Power Alone Make Sense?
Be honest: if you’re in Band A with actual 20+ hours of reliable supply and your monthly bill is ₦30,000-40,000, inverter system payback is 8-10 years.
That’s borderline. You’re not saving dramatically compared to other scenarios.
But how many Nigerians actually have reliable 20+ hours daily? In reality, even Band A customers face outages, especially during dry season or when transformers blow.
The minute you add a generator to supplement grid power, inverter economics shift dramatically in solar’s favor.
What About Generator as Backup?
Some people suggest: “Keep generator for emergencies, use inverter for daily power.”
Smart approach, but here’s what happens:
Generators that sit unused for months develop problems. Fuel goes stale. Carburetors gum up. Batteries die. When you finally need it for that rare emergency, it won’t start.
If you install a proper solar + battery system sized correctly, you won’t need generator backup. Even during harmattan (reduced sun), a well-sized battery bank carries you through.
Keep the generator if you want peace of mind, but within 6 months you’ll realize you never actually use it.
The Actual Question Isn’t “Is It Expensive?”
The actual question is: “Can I afford to keep spending ₦75,000-320,000 monthly on generator fuel and unreliable grid power?”
Because that’s what “saving money” by avoiding inverter systems costs you. Every single month. Forever.
Year 1: You “saved” ₦3.5 million by not buying inverter system. You spent ₦1.8 million on generator and grid power. Net: -₦1.7 million
Year 2: You’re now ₦3.6 million behind the person who installed solar
Year 3: You need to replace your generator (another ₦530k). You’re now ₦5.5 million behind
Year 5: You’re ₦7.4 million behind and still paying ₦155k/month for power
The “expensive” inverter system owner? They’ve been paying ₦0/month since month 1. They’re coming out ahead by millions.
What About Maintenance Costs?
Fair question about lithium batteries and inverters – do they need maintenance like generators?

Solar panels: Occasional cleaning (rain usually handles this). Maybe once every 3-4 months wipe them down. That’s it.
Inverters: Modern inverters are solid-state electronics. No moving parts. Nothing to service. They just work.
Realistic annual maintenance costs: ₦10,000-20,000 max for occasional panel cleaning by someone if you don’t want to do it yourself.
Compare that to generator maintenance (₦60,000-100,000 annually) and battery replacements (₦2.4 million every 2 years for tubular).
Financing Reality Check
“But I don’t have ₦3.5 million sitting around.”
Nobody does. Here’s what people actually do:
Commercial properties: Business owners often take loans for inverter systems. Interest is 30-35% annually, but when you’re saving ₦10k-50k daily in generator costs, the loan payment is still less than current power spending.
Residential (smart approach): Track exactly what you spend on power for 3 months. Generator fuel, NERC bills, generator maintenance. Add it up.
That number is what you’re spending every month anyway. An installment payment on an inverter system is often LESS than your current monthly power costs.
You’re not adding a new expense – you’re redirecting existing power spending into an asset that eliminates future costs.
Residential (aggressive approach): Some families have cut other expenses temporarily (eat out less, postpone vacation, downgrade internet plan) for 6-12 months to save for inverter system. Short-term sacrifice for permanent power solution.
So Is an Inverter System Expensive?
Depends on your math skills.
If you only look at the upfront cost (₦1.7-5.5 million), yes it seems expensive.
If you calculate what you’re already spending and will continue spending (₦900k-4 million annually), inverter systems are actually cheap.
Very cheap.
Small home: Breaks even in less than 2 years, saves ₦3.5 million over 5 years
Standard home: Breaks even in less than 2 years, saves ₦7.4 million over 5 years
Large home: Breaks even in 1.5 years, saves ₦16.8 million over 5 years
After payback, you have 10-15 more years of free power. The battery lasts 15+ years. Solar panels 25+ years. Inverter 10-15 years.
Compare that to generators that need replacement every 3-4 years and consume fuel forever.
The expensive choice isn’t buying an inverter system. The expensive choice is NOT buying one and continuing to burn money on fuel every single month.
