Can I Add Solar Panels to My Existing Inverter?

Plenty of Nigerian homes already have an inverter and a battery. It came in years ago to carry the lights and the TV through an outage, and it has been quietly doing that ever since.

Then the fuel bill gets uncomfortable and the obvious thought arrives. Can I just add panels to what I already have?

Sometimes yes, and it is the cheapest upgrade you will ever make. Sometimes it costs more than starting again. The difference comes down to three things, and you can check all of them before you spend anything.

Adding panels to a healthy system is the cheapest upgrade there is. The question is whether yours is a candidate.

First, what are you actually trying to fix?

Worth being clear with yourself, because it changes the answer.

If you want to stop your battery draining and never recharging because NEPA barely comes, panels solve that directly. But if you want to run more things, or run them longer, panels alone will not do it. That is a battery and inverter question, and panels will just fill a small tank faster.

Check one: is your inverter solar ready?

This is the first gate, and it is binary.

Some inverters have a charge controller built in, usually called hybrid or solar inverters, and they take panels directly. Others are plain inverter chargers that only know how to charge from NEPA. Look at the back of the unit and on the label for PV input terminals, or the letters MPPT or PWM.

If you have PV terminals, you are in good shape.

And if you do not, you are still not stuck, which is the part people assume rules them out. You can always add an external charge controller. It is a separate box that sits between the panels and the battery, takes what the panels make and feeds it to the battery safely, and it does the job your inverter was never built to do.

It costs less than most people expect, and far less than replacing a working inverter. So a plain inverter charger is not the end of the conversation. It just adds one component to the shopping list.

Check two: what battery are you running?

This is the one that decides whether the upgrade is worth doing at all, and it is where most people get an unwelcome answer.

If you have tubular or lead acid batteries, adding panels to them is often money badly spent. They only give you about half of what you paid for before you start damaging them, they hate sitting at a partial charge, and they will be due for replacement in a year or two anyway. You would be buying panels to charge something you are about to throw away. We set out that arithmetic in before you buy that tubular battery.

If you already have lithium, this is much better news. It takes charge readily, is comfortable at partial charge through a grey week, and will still be there in ten years to make use of the panels.

Check three: your roof, and your real usage

Panels need somewhere to go that actually catches sun. That sounds obvious and it is where jobs quietly fail, because a roof with a tank, a neighbour’s building or a tree over it produces a fraction of what the same panels make ten feet away.

Then there is the sum that decides how many. Your panels have to make back what your house uses in a day, in the hours you actually get sun, on a bad day rather than a perfect one. When adding panels is clearly worth it

  • Your inverter has PV terminals or takes an external controller
  • Your battery is lithium and healthy
  • You have unshaded roof space facing roughly the right way
  • Your battery already carries you through the night, it just never refills

If that is you, this is a genuinely good upgrade. You are adding the cheap part of a solar system to the expensive parts you already own.

When you are better off starting again

  • Your batteries are tubular and more than a year old
  • Your inverter already struggles or overloads with what you run now
  • You want to add an AC or a deep freezer at the same time
  • The existing install was done badly and you have never trusted it

In those cases, bolting panels onto it spends real money propping up something that needs replacing. It is not what anybody wants to hear, and it is cheaper to hear it now than after you have bought the panels.

Where people get stuck on this one

Can I add panels a few at a time? Within limits, yes, and it is a sensible way to spread the cost. But the wiring and the controller have to be specified for where you are going, not where you are starting, or you pay to redo it.

Will panels alone let me run my AC? No. Panels generate, they do not carry surge or store anything. Running an AC is an inverter and battery question, which we answered honestly here.

Three checks, then a decision

Check three things. Does the inverter take panels, is the battery worth charging, and does the roof see the sun? Two yeses and a maybe is a good upgrade. A tubular battery is usually a no.
