How Many Solar Panels Does a 6kVA Inverter Need?

How many panels? Your daily kWh decides it, not the inverter

A 6kVA inverter does not need any particular number of panels. Instead, panel count is set by the energy you use in a day, so a house using 10kWh needs about six 550W panels, while one using 20kWh needs twelve.

Why the inverter rating does not decide it

Now this is the question almost everybody asks, and it hides an assumption. It assumes the inverter and the panels are matched to each other, the way a plug matches a socket.

They are not. Instead, your inverter decides what you run at once. Your panels decide how much energy comes in over a day. Those are different jobs, and two houses with identical 6kVA inverters can correctly have four panels and fourteen.

So the question worth asking is not how many panels a 6kVA needs. It is how many panels your evening needs.

What actually decides panel count

  • Your daily energy use, in kilowatt hours. This is the big one and everything else adjusts it.
  • Peak sun hours where you live. Port Harcourt runs softer than the north, and the rainy season is its own conversation.
  • System losses. Heat, dust, cable and conversion losses mean an array never delivers its sticker figure.
  • Your charge controller’s ceiling, which is the one hard limit in the list.

Working it out from your daily kWh

First, take your daily usage in kWh. Then divide by your peak sun hours, and divide again by system efficiency. We use four peak sun hours and 78 per cent efficiency here, which is deliberately conservative for Nigeria, and you can argue with both.

So a house using 10kWh a day needs 10 divided by 4, divided by 0.78, which gives about 3.2 kilowatts of panels. At 550W each that is six panels.

How many solar panels for a 6kVA inverter?

Between four and twelve 550W panels, because it depends entirely on your daily usage. A 6kVA in a modest house may only justify four. The same inverter in a house with two air conditioners running all evening justifies twelve, and the inverter is identical in both.

The 2kVA version

So the arithmetic does not change, only the numbers going into it. A flat on a 2kVA typically uses three to five kWh a day, which is two or three panels.

How many panels for a 2kVA inverter?

Usually two or three 550W panels, because a 2kVA house is normally using three to five kWh a day. The 2kVA load list shows what that consumption is actually made of.

Charge controller limits

Now here is the one place the inverter does get a say. Every hybrid inverter has a maximum panel input, in watts and in volts. And exceeding the voltage limit damages it rather than simply wasting the extra.

So check the maximum PV input on the datasheet before buying panels, and check the maximum open circuit voltage for your string. A good installer does this without being asked, and it is a fair question to ask anyone who does not.

Can you have too many solar panels?

Yes, in two ways. First, past the charge controller’s rating the extra is either wasted or harmful, depending on whether you exceeded watts or volts. And past your battery’s ability to absorb the charge, you are paying for energy with nowhere to go.
