What Can a 6kVA Inverter Actually Carry? (Real Loads)

What a 6kVA carries. Appliance by appliance, in real watts

A 6kVA inverter carries about 4,800 watts continuously, not 6,000. That is enough for a full house of lights, fans, a fridge, a freezer, a pumping machine and one or two inverter air conditioners, as long as they do not all start at the same moment.

The short answer

So think of it as a budget of 4,800 watts, and think of every appliance as spending some of it. So the useful question is not what a 6kVA can power. It is how far down your list the money goes before it runs out.

Now we spend that budget from the top, in the order a Nigerian home actually switches things on.

Why 6kVA is not 6000 watts

The kVA figure measures apparent power, and watts measure the real work done. Because an inverter is rated at a power factor, usually 0.8, you multiply to get the watts. So 6 times 0.8 gives 4.8 kilowatts, which is 4,800 watts.

Some newer hybrid units are rated one to one, which means 6kVA really is 6,000W. However, you cannot assume it. Look on the label for the kW figure, and if you want the full explanation we wrote kVA, kW and kWh explained for exactly this.

A realistic 6kVA load list

So here is the budget being spent. Running watts, not surge, and rounded to what the kit in an ordinary home actually draws.

Switched onAddsRunning total
Ten LED lights100W100W
Three ceiling fans210W310W
Fridge150W460W
Deep freezer200W660W
TV, decoder, router, phones300W960W
One 1.5HP inverter air conditioner1,200W2,160W
1HP pumping machine750W2,910W
Second 1.5HP inverter air conditioner1,200W4,110W
A 6kVA at 0.8 power factor stops at 4,800W. This list reaches 4,110W with two air conditioners running.

So a 6kVA carries a normal four bedroom house comfortably, and it still has room left at the bottom of the list. That is the honest answer, and it is why the unit sells as well as it does.

What can a 6kVA inverter power?

Lights, fans, a fridge, a freezer, televisions, routers, a pumping machine and one or two inverter air conditioners, all at once. However, it will not carry an electric cooker, an instant water heater or three older air conditioners, because those are heating loads and they spend the budget in one go.

The display tells you what you are actually spending. Most homes are surprised by how little the lights and fans cost and how much the cooling does.

What it will not carry

In practice, anything that makes heat electrically empties the budget faster than anything else in your house.

  • Electric cooker or hotplate. Three thousand watts and upwards, from one ring.
  • Instant water heater. Similar, and it runs whenever somebody wants a shower.
  • Electric iron. Fine on its own, awkward when the air conditioners are already running.
  • Three or more older air conditioners. A non-inverter unit draws far more than its inverter equivalent and surges hard every time the compressor starts.

Still, surge is the part people miss. A pumping machine that runs at 750W can pull three times that for the first second, so two motors starting together can trip an inverter that was coping perfectly a moment earlier.

Air conditioners on a 6kVA

So one 1.5HP inverter air conditioner is comfortable. Two is fine if the rest of the house is modest, which the table above shows. Yet three is where it stops being a 6kVA conversation.

Can a 6kVA inverter run an air conditioner?

Yes, and usually two. So choose inverter type air conditioners rather than the older units, because they draw less while running and start gently instead of snatching. We went through this properly in can a solar inverter system power my air conditioner.

How many batteries a 6kVA needs

Now the inverter decides how much you can run at once. Your battery decides how long. They are separate questions and mixing them is where most sizing goes wrong.

How many batteries does a 6kVA inverter need?

In short, it depends on your evening, not the inverter. A house drawing 2,000W for six hours needs 12kWh of delivered energy, which is roughly three 51.2V 100Ah lithium batteries once depth of discharge and inverter losses are counted. The Ah to kWh calculator does that conversion for you.

How many panels a 6kVA needs

Once more, not the inverter’s decision. Panels replace what you used yesterday, so your daily kWh sets the count, and the charge controller sets the ceiling. We worked it through in how many solar panels a 6kVA inverter needs.

If you are still deciding between sizes, the honest comparison is against the smaller unit, so read what a 2kVA inverter can carry next and see which list looks like your house.
