How to Choose a Solar Panel for Your Home in Nigeria

A man called me last month with three quotes on his table. Same house, same rough budget, three completely different panel recommendations. One installer said monocrystalline was the only sensible choice. Another said polycrystalline was fine and cheaper. The third just wanted to sell whatever was in stock.

So he asked me the question I get almost every week. How do you actually choose a solar panel for your home?

Most guides online will bury you in efficiency percentages and cell diagrams before you understand what you are buying. That is backwards. You do not need to become an engineer. You need to understand what the choice means for your home, your budget and how long the system serves you. Let us go through it the way I would explain it to a friend.

Mono and poly, without the jargon

You will hear two words thrown around: monocrystalline and polycrystalline. These are the two common types here, and honestly the technical difference matters less than what it means in practice.

Think of it this way. Mono panels are made from a single pure block of silicon. Poly panels are made from several pieces melted together. That is the core of it, and the technical background on photovoltaic systems goes deeper if you want it.

What that means for you is simple. Mono is more efficient, so it makes more power from the same roof space, and it costs more. Poly is slightly less efficient, costs less, and still does the job when you have the space to make up the difference.

You will also see the colour difference side by side. Mono is usually black, poly has a blue speckled look. So if your roof space is tight, mono is usually worth the extra. If you have plenty of roof and want to keep the cost down, poly will power your home perfectly well.

The real decision is not mono against poly

Here is what I tell everyone who calls confused about panel types. The brand and the type matter, but that is not where people lose money.

People lose money by skipping the steps that come before the panel conversation entirely. Before you compare anything, you need three things: how much power you actually use, what size battery will store it properly, and whether the person sizing your system knows what they are doing.

Because I have watched customers buy excellent, expensive mono panels and still end up disappointed. Not because the panels were bad, but because nobody calculated their daily use first. The array was oversized for a house that barely uses power in daylight, or undersized for a home running an air conditioner and a deep freezer.

What actually decides panel quality

Read the warranty terms carefully. A quality panel comes with a performance warranty of twenty to twenty five years, not just a product warranty of one or two. These are different things. The product warranty covers manufacturing defects. The performance warranty guarantees the panel still produces a stated percentage of its original output years in. If a seller cannot explain the difference, that tells you something.

Ask about the manufacturer. Not every factory is equal. Some have built panels for over a decade with real quality control. Others assemble cheap components with minimal testing. You cannot see this on the panel, so ask your installer directly who they source from and how long that manufacturer has been going.

Confirm it is rated for our conditions. Heat affects panel output more than people expect, and yours will spend a lot of time in it. A panel with a better temperature coefficient holds performance on a hot afternoon in Lagos or Abuja far better than a poorly rated one.

Why the panel cannot be chosen on its own

Your panel does not work in isolation. It is one part of a system with a battery and an inverter, and all three have to be matched.

So if you buy excellent panels and pair them with an undersized battery, you waste the extra power they make in the day because there is nowhere to put it. Same with the inverter. If it cannot handle the output from the panels and the demand from your appliances, you will have problems no matter how good the panels are.

What to check before you sign off on any quote

Ask your installer to walk you through their sizing calculation rather than handing you a number. Ask what happens if your usage grows in a year or two, because a system that cannot expand costs more to fix later than it would have cost to plan for now.

Mono, poly and the questions underneath

Is mono always better than poly? Not always. Mono is more efficient and better in tight roof space or high heat. Poly is a solid, cheaper choice when you have room for a larger array. The right answer depends on your roof, your budget and your load, not on which sounds more premium.

Do poly panels last as long? Both types run twenty to twenty five years or more when they are well made and properly installed. Lifespan comes down to build quality and installation far more than the mono or poly choice.
